Protection of Facilities from UAVs Using Fiberglass Mesh

The risk of drone attacks is constant, which makes protecting facilities from UAVs a necessity rather than an optional security measure today. Fiberglass mesh is an effective passive means of protecting sites from unmanned aerial vehicles.

It is designed to:

- intercept UAVs during attempted flyovers or dives

- damage the drone’s structure upon contact;

- reduce the kinetic energy of impact;

- prevent UAVs and their payloads from entering the protected area.

The mesh is used to protect industrial enterprises, military installations, and government facilities. Thanks to its low weight and high strength, it is easy to install and adaptable to various operating conditions.

The product is made from a modern composite material based on high-strength glass fibers. In terms of strength, such mesh is comparable to metal counterparts, while being significantly lighter, corrosion-resistant, and radio-transparent, meaning it does not interfere with communication and surveillance systems. Composite mesh can be used as a primary or supplementary element in integrated protection systems and is suitable for countering small and lightweight UAVs, including ramming and dropping types.

Comparison of Fiberglass Mesh and Polymer Mesh

Article

Test results have shown that fiberglass mesh has significantly higher impact resistance compared to polymer mesh used by competitors. When a load was dropped from a height of 9.58 m, the fiberglass mesh maintained its integrity up to an impact energy of 212 J (load weight 3.6 kg), whereas the polymer mesh was penetrated at just 35 J (load weight 0.6 kg). Thus, fiberglass mesh withstands impact loads more than six times greater than its polymer counterpart.

The obtained data confirm the high mechanical strength and resistance of fiberglass mesh to dynamic loads, making it a more reliable and safer solution for use in conditions where there is a risk of falling objects from height.
